- Scan the road edges constantly. Deer appear from treelines and ditches β look 200β300 ft ahead, not just the car in front.
- One deer means more deer. If one crosses, slow to a near stop β the rest of the group is right behind it.
- Use high beams when possible. They illuminate eye-shine far ahead. Dim for oncoming traffic, then raise immediately.
- Slow down, don't swerve. Hitting a deer straight on is almost always safer than swerving into a ditch or oncoming lane.
- Reduce speed near treelines and creek crossings. Deer follow water and drainage corridors β these are the highest-risk crossing zones.
